Basement project

So, for a while now I've been brooding over the idea of revamping my basement and transforming it into a 70s time capsule (pretty much). I want it to feel like the moment you step into the basement, you're instantly transported through time to a retro 70s lounge.
Right now, my basement is pretty much an extension of our storage room. I figure, since our house was made in the 70s, and the basement on its own is a rather accurate reflection of that, why not play it up a bit and have a fun project for the summer?
So today I ran the idea by my parents, to which they responded: "Sure, just don't misplace our suitcases" and went down to see if anything can be done immediately. I was wrong, it's way too much work to jump into on the spot without planning.
So on Wednesday Anda and I have decided to start work on this "70s basement project". I'll be jotting down plans and inspirations before hand, and also running them by my parents.

Here are some "before shots". As you can see, it's a real mess right now. The wallpaper is what gets me really excited, though.
Spot the portrait of my kid Dad, lol.

Maybe a floor-length geometric-patterned curtain between the main area & the laundry room?

This dresser has to go.

Now here's my inspiration. What I'd like to do is have it really colorful. Lots of different patterns, textures, pillows, shapes, plants ?

Photos on the walls with bands like the Velvet Underground and more cool patterns.
Records and vintage dolls. Old telephone? VHS player + TV set. Cool lamps. Bean bag chairs and lots of pillows. Record player, type writer?

I think it'd be the coolest thing to somehow have a bar area. Perhaps a low shelf with two stools ? Cool things on the bar like a toaster, fruit basket, fondue set, Espresso machine.. Things hanging above the bar like patterned plates, mugs, etc.

Circular carpet.

Barrrrrrr.

Overall what we're going for is a place to chill and be inspired and watch old movies and listen to records and drink coffee. And of course, make lots of really amazing memories. Can't forget that.

  4. Awesome idea, good luck! Aha, if your house is anything like mine, and doesn't have air conditioning, the basement is the best place to be in weather like this.

    1. Thanks! We have central air, so the basement is FREEZING. Like arctic. But haha, sweaters are ok.
